Really Simple Syndication Made Simpler: Understanding RSS

The Small and Medium Enterprises always face a challenge of understanding the key terms related to Internet. Internet has evolved so fast that there are always new things to be looked into and for small and emerging businesses understanding these tools which can really affect business keeps posing as a challenge.

For any emerging business Internet based tools are a boon which can help the business grow to the next level. This has been proved overtime and hence keeping a track of all the freely available tools is crucial. The IndiaMART Knowledge Services team is working with the same aim of helping SMEs grow to the next level by empowering them with the right information. Lets make RSS really simple with this post!

What exactly is RSS?
Many a times you must have heard of the terms RSS and RSS readers and must have seen many people accessing multiple pieces of information which is delivered automatically to them in real time. RSS or Really Simple Syndication helps you achieve just that!

In simple terms RSS is a combination of web feed formats, used to publish frequently updated information like blogs, news feeds etc, in a particular understandable standardized format. An RSS feed document is generally either a full or a summarized (partial) text which includes the text with the metadata such as publishing information.

Okay, this is good, but how does it benefit me?
RSS or Really Simple Syndication, as the term goes, essentially is a content syndication methodology. It searches for updates and syndicates (brings together) content which you as a reader have subscribed to, automatically. Eg: if you are interested in following the top 10 blogs in your industry and you don't necessarily have the time to log into each one of them daily and read the udpated posts, the best way you can simply go through all of them is by following the RSS feeds of the blog(s).

The real benefit is in information syndication in the least possible time. While businesses are working in the ecosystem of the knowledge economy, information is the key to business success. Getting to the right information at the right time is crucial and having access to information in real time obviously will keep you always ahead in the marketplace.

But how do I access this information: the RSS feeds?
While you are accessing syndicated information in the form of RSS feeds, you need to use an RSS feed reader, which is also known as an aggregator/ feed reader. An RSS feed reader is a piece of software which can either be online, desktop based or mobile based.

All you simply need to do is subscribe to the RSS feeds of the information source you want to follow using your RSS reader. Eg: if you need to follow the RSS feeds of the IndiaMART Knowledge Blog, you can use a RSS feed reader like Google Reader and enter the RSS feed URL of the blog in the reader. The rest will automatically be taken care of by the reader and you can access all posts henceforth from this blog and others at one place on your screen. The feed readers basically provides a good looking, easy to use interface between the XML based RSS feeds and the reader.

How do I get a RSS reader?
One of the most effective RSS readers is free and is provided by Google. To access it click here.

The red arrow on the left sidebar on the RSS reader marks the button which helps you add a subscription to any source of information with an RSS feed on the internet.

Google readers is a free application which helps you syndicate content in real time and access it anywhere, even while being on the move.

What are the other feed reader options available?

  1. NewsGator
  2. Bloglines
  3. FeedDemon
  4. Awasu
  5. Blog Navigator
  6. RSS Bandit

How can RSS help my customers be updated with my business?
As an updated business you can start a blog which is aimed at ensuring that your customers always remain updated with all the business updates and hence are always engaged with the business evolution. You can ask your customers to Subscribe to the RSS feed of your blog and be updated all the time in real time. and not just text. RSS feeds can help you consume any sort of content from podcasts to blogs to videos and much more.

Business Opportunities?
Many focused businesses like retail, healthcare, realty are reaching out to their customers using content syndication. Businesses are publishing information on a regular basis which is being consumed by people who are interested in keeping themselves updated with what is happening in the market. Eg: someone who is interested in investing into realty and spaces can subscribe to information from various updated realty players and hence keep in touch with the market movements.
